bio

A recent graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, with a BA in Jazz Vocal Performance, and Liberal Arts Minor in Cultural Studies, 22-year-old Darynn Dean is ready to take the world by storm. Growing up in Los Angeles, from a young age Darynn was mentored and coached by jazz singer Barbara Morrison and pianist Howlett Smith. No stranger to Jazz, her grandfather, Donald Dean Sr., is a renowned drummer (Les McCann, Carmen McCrae and Eddie Harris), her father, Donald Dean Jr., is also a drummer (Kenny Burrell, Rickey Lee Jones), and her cousin, 20-year old Jamael Dean (Kamasi Washington), is an emerging recording/touring piano player. Now, Darynn has set her sights on taking her place in the family legacy and climbing the imposing mountain of Jazz greats.
In 2019 Darynn performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency where she was mentored by jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Jason Moran. She has played with international bassist Dave Holland and sung alongside Freddie Cole for the New England Conservatory’s “Nat King Cole Tribute”. She has shared the Grammy week stage with Dave Koz, Hubert Laws, and Aaron Parks. Her accomplishments include finalist in the Music Center Spotlight Awards, as well as, first place in the National Young Arts Foundation, Dolo Coker and NAACP ACT-SO competitions. She mesmerized the audience while performing for Quincy Jones in LA Jazz Society’s “Celebrating the World of Quincy Jones: A Tribute.” Darynn Dean is well on her way to the top! A true rising star from Los Angeles, Darynn says, “I’ve been fortunate to have been recognized amongst the best in my class at each level. I’m so excited to move forward to my next chapter, and I can’t wait to share the stage with the Jazz greats of my generation.”

With college completed, Darynn is looking forward recording her first CD, touring the world, and bringing her own message to the world through music.
